Right. She wants to be wild! Cay helps her out on that one.

Cay's attitude about being lesbian was terrific.

Yeah, she plays a woman who is not the least bit conflicted about her sexual preference. She has other problems and that's not one of them. She is a young woman who is conflicted about commitments. She is unable to commit to being an artist and to a relationship which is actually what Vivian is all about. I mean Vivian has a job that I think most women in the 1950s could not have. There were very few women university English professors in the 1950s. To get that job took a lot of determination and commit-

ment.

Other than that and a few other details, to me, it wasn't blatantly obvious that the movie was set in 1959.

I wanted it to be 1959, but I did not want it to be constantly reminding the audience about it. I wanted it to be interchangeable. What is your reaction to this statement from David Canby's New York Times review. He says, Desert Hearts' is as flat as a recorded message from the tel-

My response is that Canby should go see this movie with a live audience. It would show him that people do respond to this film and that doesn't happen with flat films. This is a film throughout which people express their responses audibly. I also want to say that even though that appeared in the Friday [April 4] New York Times, we sold out Friday's 5:30, 7:20, 9:10, and 11:00 shows, and came within tickets of beating out "Rocky III" at the box office record for a Friday in New York.

Terrific! What would you like to say to our readership?

I'd like to say that I see "Desert Hearts" as a kind of communication tool that can be used by gays and lesbians to bring their best straight friends or their aunts, uncles, mothers, and fathers to see. It is an expression of a positive homosexual relationship that can be used as that kind of a communication tool. I hope that people will reach out and bring people into the theater because I have seen straight people very positively ar-
